Amazing Grace Written lyrics

Do you remember the moving lyrics of Amazing Grace? Here's how it used to go!

1 Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)

that saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

was blind, but now I see.

2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

and grace my fears relieved;

how precious did that Grace appear

the hour I first believed!

3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares

I have already come:

'tis grace has brought me safe thus far,

and Grace will lead me home.

4 The Lord has promised good to me,

his word my hope secures;

he will my shield and portion be

as long as life endures.

5 Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,

and mortal life shall cease:

I shall possess, within the veil,

a life of joy and peace.

6 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,

the sun forbear to shine;

but God, who called me here below,

will be forever mine.

The History and Origin of "Amazing Grace"

The History and Origin of "Amazing Grace"

Amazing Grace is the work of John Newton, an English slave trader involved in the African slave trade. After his awakening, he left his life of slave trading and became a minister. During his initial days, he wasn't a devotee and did not believe in religion. But it took just one instance of near-death to change his entire perspective.

During one of his voyages in 1748, his ship and crew got stuck in a violent storm. He prayed that the storm would ward off from the Buncrana coast. As he was standing at the desk, a man came and replaced him. The next moment that man was swept away in the water by a mad wave and drowned to death. Newton was saved!

He and his crew even managed to survive the entire storm and journeyed back safely. This was his moment of salvation. However, even after his spiritual awakening, he continued to indulge himself in the slave trade of African Americans. Newton only retired in 1754 owing to medical reasons. After this, he started studying theology, obtained a university degree, and became a minister in 1764.

Newton wrote, "I once was lost, but now am found/Was blind, but now I see." These words became the foundation of what later would come to be known as "Amazing Grace." In 1773, when he was a pastor of the Anglican church in Great Britain, he delivered a sermon on New Year's Day that was accompanied by the beloved song.

Olney Hymns in Three Books
