Origins and history
Baby Shark is an ever-popular song that is well-loved amongst kids and adults of all ages. And why shouldn’t it be? It is comical, fun, and, overall, extremely addictive, as is evident by the fact that it is the first ever video on Youtube to cross 10 billion views.
But it wasn’t always a song for children. It started off as a campfire song in the 20th century. The lyrics are said to have been created by camp counsellors after taking inspiration from the movie Jaws.
Each verse takes us through each member of the shark family – baby, mommy, daddy, grandpa, and grandma. It has several other versions that talk about the shark hunting fish, killing a sailor, or eating people who go to heaven.
The song and video themselves have several copyright claims made by different people and companies. There are trademarked goodies and merchandise available for purchase. However, New York Times claims that the characters and songs aren’t anyone’s property and belong to the public domain.
The most famous version of the song belongs to Pinkfong, an education brand owned by South Korean entertainment company SmartStudy. This Korean song, without children, was first uploaded on November 26, 2015. However, the one with the most views, Baby Shark dance, was only uploaded on June 17, 2016, and started garnering views in 2017.
