Cheesy and Easy Sock Puppets for Valentine's Day and so much more...

easy sock puppets

As soon as Christmas lights went off, it seems like the very next day the red stuff for Valentine's day came right up. All we hear - Valentine, Chocolate, Gifts, Cards and so on.

Every year I feel this enormous wish (or should I say challenge) in me to teach my children that the biggest gift of all is not bought at the store.

Two easy sock puppets.

So this year I took my "Valentine Day Challenge" in a little different genre. We made easy sock puppets and had a play according to a wonderful story - Snowy Valentine by David Petersen.

Without further due, let me introduce to you .... {insert loud applauds} -

Miss Tickles and Mr. Hugs

How to make easy sock puppets heart shaped

First of all, let me tell you that these sock puppets require no sewing, so put your sewing machine back in a closet.

Here is what you will need:

And here is what you will have to do:

  1. Put the heart shaped cardboard in each sock.
  2. Secure with a cloth pin on top to form a heart.

  1. Glue the eyes, lips and other accessories to your personal liking.

You are done.

Let the show begin...

Making the easy sock puppets was the first part of this activity. My daughter enjoyed picking accessories for the puppets and gluing them on.

After the puppets were made we picked a book and read a wonderful story about a bunny who was searching for a Valentine gift for his wife. After a long search (and still no gift) he finally realized that the biggest gift is THE LOVE and how much you try for other person (as he shaped a big heart in all his path while looking for the gift).

Even though our puppets don't look like bunnies from the book and we didn't have the other characters we still had a blast making our own version of Miss Tickles and Mr. Hugs Valentine's Day. Which is another story. 🙂

The most important lesson is learned - gifts don't come from the store, they come from the heart. These easy sock puppets and the Snowy Valentine book were the great tools to teach this lesson.

As I sit down to rest after our play, I put a check on our un-materialistic Valentine's Day challenge 2014.

How do you teach your children that not every gift needs to be bought?

I would really appreciate your comments and answers.
