History and Origin

The initial version of this song was published in London in 1797 in “Infant Institutes.”

It also appeared in “Mother Goose’s Melodies,” printed in Boston, Massachusetts, around 1825.

The verses of the older version were collected from Aberdeen, Scotland, and were published in 1868. Also, the verses were considered an early version of “Eeper Weeper.”

There are several debates regarding the song’s origin. A similar song was found in Scotland in 1868, but the word “pumpkin” was missing from the lyrics.

There can be a possibility of shifting this song to the USA and adapting it there. However, evidence is missing to support this possibility.

Besides, there are many interpretations of this song. One of them states that Peter had a wife who was unfaithful to him. Due to this, he murdered her and hid her body in a pumpkin.

Another interpretation suggests that Peter locked her wife into a room so she could not escape anymore.

Besides, in McFarlane’s “Twisted Fairy Tales,” Peter was known as a cannibalistic serial killer who would store his victim’s body parts in a hollow pumpkin.

Thank you so much for teaching me the history and origins of "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater". I was really hoping to find some evidence to raise awareness about the historical backstories of classic nursery rhymes. The main reason is the fact in which most children, such as preschoolers and kindergartners, are not getting to learn about these important and serious issues and topics enough. So we the people now need to enforce/re-enforce teachers' lessons to get more of their students involved in raising awareness, being more cautious, and making the world a better place to support life. Thank you very much.
