Simple Simon met a pieman,

Going to the fair;

Says Simple Simon to the pieman,

Let me taste your ware.

Says the pieman to Simple Simon,

Show me first your penny;

Says Simple Simon to the pieman,

Indeed I have not any.

Simple Simon went a-fishing,

For to catch a whale;

All the water he had got,

Was in his mother’s pail.

Simple Simon went to look

If plums grew on a thistle,

He pricked his fingers very much,

Which made poor Simon whistle

History and Origin

"Simple Simon" is a traditional nursery rhyme from 18th-century England.

There is no clear depiction of who Simple Simon was. The character first appears in an illustrated ballad chapbook titled "Simple Simon's Misfortunes and his Wife Margery's Cruelty," published in 1685 by L. How in London.

The ballad tells the story of Simple Simon's adventures after his first day of marriage with his cruel wife and how a series of unfortunate accidents puts him in a terrible situation in front of her cruel nature.

According to 1951's Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, Simple Simon's lyrics were initially recorded in a historical booklet in 1764.

In easy words, Simple Simon is a naughty boy who goes on an unhappy adventure when he tries his hands at different things.

Initially, the poem tells how Simple Simon visits the fair and meets Pieman selling tasty pies. He bought a pie from there but had an empty pocket.

Later, when he goes fishing wanting to catch a whale, he ends up filling his mother’s bucket with water.

In this way, he pricked his finger badly on thistles when roaming the plum fields.

Thus, with so many failures on his way, Simon was unhappy and bade everyone goodbye.

Simple Simon teaches everyone that being foolish will always lead to failures on the way.
